A Bold Move Pays Off for Abold at South Boston

By Lou Lauer, USARfans.com

There were two winners at the Miller Lite 250 in South Boston, Virginia. One has come out on top several times in 275 Pro Cup races prior to this past weekend and the other winner gambled and stayed on the track when everyone else pitted. Danny Abold's choice to stay out during a lap 17 caution flag period allowed him to lead his first laps in his Pro Cup career and then he held off the weather and a fast charging Benny Gordon to collect his first Pro Cup victory.

On lap 161, it was Abold leading Gordon, Mikey Kile, Mike Hampton, and Jay Fogleman onto pit road one last time, but this time it wasn't to make a pit stop - it was to take the #6N U-Pull U-Save Chevrolet into a makeshift victory lane in the infield tech garage.

Enter the second winner on Saturday night - Mother Nature. For only the 6th time since the Pro Cup Series began 12 seasons ago, a race was shortened by rain.

Welcome to South Boston!

Hi there! We made it to the track for our first race of the year! Right now the 32 cars have just hit the track to start practice today. Weather is good right now. More to come. Live scoring is online - click the box in the right column.

11:15 a.m. - Frank Deiny Jr. just made hard contact with the turn 3 wall to bring practice to a momentary stop. It looked like there may have been fluid on the track. Just before Deiny got to the corner, Gary St. Amant also nearly took the wall down but escaped without contact. Deiny was not so lucky. He is o.k. and out of the car. The team is looking at the car but it has major right front damage and may not be repairable in time for the race.

11:26 a.m. - Track re-opened for practice. No word on if Deny's car is repairable or not.

11:45 a.m. - Benny Gordon, Matt Lofton, Bobby Gill, Allen Purkhiser, and Derrick Kelley are the top five in practice so far. I'm heading down to the pits for some photos. Back later with more updates.

12:24 p.m. - Brandon Ward had an oil belt come loose. Not sure if it hurt the motor or not, as the team is still working under the hood. Sam Fullone and Ray Love, Jr. just got together in turn 2 and both cars sustained minor damage. The teams are making repairs now. Benny Gordon currently tops the practice chart, with rookie Matt Lofton 2nd, Bobby Gill in 3rd, Jeff Agnew in 4th and Toby Porter just moved up to 5th.

1 p.m. - Practice is over with no further on-track incidents. Top 5 are Gordon, Lofton, St. Amant, Gill, and Agnew. Weather is still great for right now. Maybe some showers coming later but a better chance that they do not come than that they will.

We're done for now and will have a post race report. Tune in to www.usarprocup.com for live qualifying and race updates!

Gordon Leads Motor Mile Practice

Practice is over for the 39 cars here today in Radford. The weather is fantastic at the moment and looks to hold up for the whole day. The tension in the pits is pretty high as the field is once again packed with talent and speed. This field could end up being the closest field in qualifying history for the Pro Cup Series.

Leading the pack is the Predator Ford of Benny Gordon. Tight behind him is Mark McFarland, Caleb Holman, Eric Corbett, and Johnny Rumley. Practice was slow to start as within the first 5 minutes, the #95 of Tim Kerr blew a motor and oiled down the track. When they restarted, the #08 of Ray Love, Jr. spun in the speedy dry and brought out an extended caution to clean up the track. Once those incidents were done, it was pretty much incident free until Mike Held bounced off the way in the second half of practice and then later on the #96 car, teammate to the #95 spun down the front straight and collected the inside wall.

The rest of the afternoon is filled with late model practice up until Pro Cup qualifying at 4 PM. If all works out as planned, we may try to have a LIVE RACE REPORT from the media center tonight during the race! Check back here closer to race time. The only downfall for the method we're going to use will be that you would need to be registered on this site to view the chat/report.

Woody Howard Brings Home 2nd at Myrtle Beach

It was no ordinary "day at the beach" for Woody Howard and the #55 Dean Motorsports Team this past weekend at Myrtle Beach Speedway's Mark Brooks Memorial Bi-Lo 250. Hard work, perseverance, and determination played a huge part in their second place finish.

After tying Bobby Gill with a qualifying time of 21.125 sec. Woody would start behind Gill in the 9th spot on the starting grid. What had been the second fastest car in practice now appeared to be a liability during the race.

The #55 became ill handling and was losing track position as Woody fought to stay in the game. Eventually the #55 Dean Motorsports Chevrolet would go a lap down.

Rumley into Backup Car

By Bill Link

Practice is underway once again. Teams will now have until 5 PM CST to practice and then qualifying will begin.

During this most recent practice round, Johnny Rumley put his Champion number 80 car hard into the wall. I spoke with Johnny shortly after the incident and asked him if he was satisfied that the gear change and unlimited tires would be enough to solve the problem.

After a long pause, Johnny simply said, "I hope so."
