EXCITEMENT FILLS THE GARAGE AS PAST WINNER J.P. MORGAN RETURNS TO IOWA

USARacing PressBy Elizabeth Kitts, USARacing

CONCORD, N.C. (July 19, 2010)- There is plenty of buzz and excitement around J.P. Morgan’s garage these days. And it can be summed up in two words: Iowa Speedway.

Morgan and the No. 23 team are eager to hit the track for the July 30, USARacing Pro Cup Series event. He is the defending race winner, capturing the 2009 race by 1.341 seconds over second-place finisher Drew Herring and says competing at the 0.875-mile speedway is on another level from the other tracks in the series.

“It feels awesome,” said Morgan about returning to Iowa, “I’m excited and the team is.”

For Morgan, the most exciting part about racing at Iowa is the high speeds the track carries.

“That track is about the perfect size,” Morgan said. “It’s not so big that on the straightaways you’re resting. Every time you can go fast, that’s what it’s about. The garage is awesome and everyone treats you great. Fans come out in droves and that makes everything special.”

Pace Laps

Following the fast path established by his father Darrell, Caleb Holman made his racing debut at age 13 on the dirt at Wythe Raceway in Rural Retreat, Va.

After learning the basics of car control and how to navigate through traffic, Holman worked his way up to the Late Model Series at Kingsport Speedway at age 16. After delving into the ARCA and Nationwide Series, Holman has focused on the USAR Pro Cup Series the past four years with the Abingdon-based Henderson Motorsports team.

Ryan Heavner Comes Up Shy of Pro Cup Top-Ten at Motor Mile Speedway

Press ReleasesRADFORD, VA (July 19, 2010) – Lincolnton, North Carolina’s Ryan Heavner made his first trip to Motor Mile (VA) Speedway over the weekend. He was there for the running of The USAR Pro Cup Series Heritage Truck Centers 250.

“After testing on Thursday, I felt so good about my car, and was really positive going into the race knowing I was gonna have a good finish,” said Heavner. “The team worked so hard to give me the car I needed. I just came up short of being able to deliver what I felt was for sure a top-five finish. When I would hit my marks, this car did just what I wanted it to.”

The driver qualified 11th out of the 21 that took a qualifying time, but a penalized competitor being sent to the rear moved the inside line up – sending Ryan to a ninth-place starting spot.

Unfortunately, a string of mechanical failure continued for Heavner and the Elite Auto Collision team.

Logan Ruffin Overcomes Obstacles to Claim Third Consecutive Top 5 Finish

Logan Ruffin and his #31 Turner Motorsports Chevrolet team entered Motor Mile Speedway ready to continue their string of three top-five efforts, prior to the month long break in the USARacing Pro Cup Series schedule. But the day at the Radford VA short track wouldn’t be easy for the 16-year-old. After unloading, motor issues hindered the team and allowed Ruffin to only complete one full-speed lap on the track during two separate practice sessions.

The Turner Motorsports team worked feverishly to repair the issues before qualifying. Ruffin laid down a solid lap during Saturday afternoon’s time trials, placing the #31 Impala in the 15th starting position for the Heritage Truck Centers 250. Unfortunately due to unapproved adjustments that needed to be made, Ruffin had to start the 250-lap event from the rear of the field.

Starting from the last row on the grid, Ruffin began working his way through the field as the leaders quickly caught up to the young gun. On lap 44, Ruffin went a lap down to the leaders, but the second caution waved on lap 56, allowing the teenager to receive the free pass award. Ruffin restarted on lap 66 from 10th-place on the lead lap.

Mechanical Issues for Gibson at Motor Mile

Saying that the race at Motor Mile Speedway on July 17th was hard on equipment would be an understatement and John Gibson was not immune from the attrition. John Gibson who normally drives the #13 MitiGator Ford Fusion was in the #59 car for the event, owned by Mark Gibson Racing.

“I have to say thank you to Mark Gibson for giving me the opportunity to drive for him last weekend,” said John. “I just wish we could have brought home a better finish for him. We had tested on Friday and had a pretty decent car going into qualifying. We were able to qualify 7th for the event, and I thought we’d be in a good position for a good strong finish. Unfortunately when the race started we developed rear end problems, some of which we were able to repair, but ultimately the gear let go, forcing us out of the race.”

“I just hate it for Mark,” said John. “I was really hoping we could bring home a top 5 finish for him.”

Attrition Was The Name Of The Game

DAWSONVILLE, Ga. (July 19, 2010) – The main story line from Saturday’s Heritage Truck Centers 250 at Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va., turned out to be attrition. Unfortunately, Chase Elliott and his Aaron’s Dream Machine were part of the story. Still, he came away with an eighth-place finish in a race that saw only seven of the 21 drivers who started the race still running at the finish. Elliott dropped out on Lap 198 with rear end failure.

Elliott’s race started a lot better than it ended. He qualified second behind veteran Clay Rogers, the eventual race winner. Elliott maintained his position at the drop of the green flag, but on Lap Three Brandon Ward nosed inside, allowing Benny Gordon and Derrick Kelly to pass as well, dropping Elliott to fifth.

Caution was displayed on Lap Seven for a spin in Turn Four. Jeff Agnew worked his way around Elliott on the restart, but Elliott maintained the sixth position as the frontrunners began to work the lapped traffic. It was Elliott’s turn to move by Michael Mohelski on Lap 45, but when Elliott hit his brakes to avoid a collision with Mohelski, he realized his brakes were failing.

Engines Galore Quit, But Not Rogers in USAR Pro Cup Victory

Race ResultsBy Shaun Hoy | The Roanoke Times

RADFORD -- It's safe to say that Motor Mile Speedway was not lacking in intrigue Saturday night in either of the divisions that raced there.

Philip Morris returned to the track to run in the Late Model Stock race just before the race was set to begin after the action at South Boston Speedway was canceled.

And in the USAR Pro Cup race, well, if you finished at all, you earned yourself a top-10.

First, the Pro Cup race.

Clay Rogers didn't have much trouble as he coasted to win the Heritage Truck Centers 250, his fifth win of the season. Brandon Ward finished in second place. A.J. Frank was third. Mark McFarland was fourth and Logan Ruffin fifth.

But the challenge for most of the drivers wasn't figuring out how to win. It was figuring out how to keep their car on the track. And most of them were not successful. Only seven cars finished the race and there weren't any wrecks, just a load of engine problems.
